You do not need to beat a flirty text with a better line. If you like them, let that show. "I was hoping you would notice" can answer a compliment. "I like you, too" can answer a confession. Choose the response that matches how you feel, even if that means slowing things down or keeping it friendly.

Decide whether you want to flirt back
Do you like the attention? Want a date? Still figuring it out? Start there. You can enjoy a compliment without agreeing to anything else. "Thank you, that made me smile" is enough when you do not want to go further.
The examples below are for adults 18 and older. Some return the interest, some ask for a date, and some set a limit. Pick the one that says what you mean.
Not sure whether they are flirting? Ask
A fast reply or a wink can mean different things. Look at the conversation around it. If you would welcome a yes, you can ask, "Are you flirting with me? Because I'm enjoying it."
If they say they were being friendly, accept the answer. You do not need to decode what they secretly meant.
Try a reply you can say out loud
Take "I had a great time with you." Your answer could be "That made me smile," "Me too," or "Me too. Again Friday?" Each says something different.
Choose the one that sounds closest to you, then change the words if you need to. A plain, sincere text often says more than an elaborate comeback.
You can leave the banter behind
Once you have both said you are interested, you can talk about dinner, your day, or when to meet. Every message does not need another wink.
You can slow things down, too. "I like talking with you, but I'd rather meet for coffee first" makes both parts clear. If they keep pushing after that, end the exchange.
Find an example that fits
These conversations are fictional and prewritten. Change the details and wording to fit the person you are talking to.
01 · Someone you like compliments how you looked.
The situation: "You looked really good tonight."
Pick a reply to rewrite
Thank you. I was really happy I got to see you.
I was hoping you'd notice.
Thanks. You looked pretty good yourself.
What this reply does: You can accept the compliment without arguing with it. Return one if you mean it.
What you could say next: Bring up something you enjoyed that night. "Still laughing about your story from dinner" gives you something to talk about.
When to leave it there: The comments turn sexual and you do not want that. Say so, or end the chat.
02 · They say they like your company.
The situation: "You make everything more interesting."
Pick a reply to rewrite
That means a lot. I really like talking with you, too.
You make it pretty easy.
Then we should do this again soon. Free this weekend?
What this reply does: A sincere answer fits a sincere compliment. You can also take the opening to suggest seeing them.
What you could say next: If you both want to meet, name a day. You do not need to keep proving how interesting you are.
When to leave it there: You do not share the interest. Thank them without suggesting a date.
03 · They tease you about your year-round iced coffee.
The situation: "Iced coffee? In December?"
Pick a reply to rewrite
I have many flaws. This is not one of them.
You can make your case for hot coffee on our next date.
And yet here you are, still talking to me.
What this reply does: This works when the teasing already feels friendly. The date version gives the joke somewhere to go.
What you could say next: Let them defend their hot coffee. If you both want another date, choose a time.
When to leave it there: The teasing starts to sting. "That one wasn't funny to me" is a perfectly good reply.
04 · You cannot tell whether they are joking or flirting.
The situation: "You're trouble."
Pick a reply to rewrite
What gave me away?
Only if ordering dessert counts as trouble.
Are you flirting with me? Because I'm enjoying this.
What this reply does: You can play along without deciding what they mean. The last reply asks outright, so use it if you want to know.
What you could say next: If they say yes, tell them you are interested. If it was a joke, you can carry on without making it awkward.
When to leave it there: They say it is friendly. Do not treat that as an invitation to convince them.
05 · They wish you were spending the evening together.
The situation: "I wish you were here."
Pick a reply to rewrite
Me too. What would we be doing?
Keep saying that and I'll start looking at my calendar.
I'd like that. Want to make plans for the weekend?
What this reply does: Return the feeling if you share it. You can enjoy the thought without agreeing to go over tonight.
What you could say next: If you want to meet, suggest a day that works. If tonight does not work, say that.
When to leave it there: They push you to come over after you have said no.
06 · They hint at taking you out.
The situation: "Someone should take you to that Italian place."
Pick a reply to rewrite
Did you have someone in mind?
I'd say yes if you're offering.
I'd like to go with you. Thursday?
What this reply does: You can tease out the invitation or answer the one you think they are making.
What you could say next: Once you both agree it is a date, confirm the time and place.
When to leave it there: They keep dodging a clear answer. You can leave the invitation with them.
07 · They send a sweet text after your date.
The situation: "I haven't stopped smiling since I got home."
Pick a reply to rewrite
Now you have me smiling at my phone. I had a really nice time.
Good. Glad it wasn't just me.
Same here. I'd like to see you again next week.
What this reply does: There is no need to find a cleverer version of "me too." Let the message be sweet.
What you could say next: Mention the moment you keep thinking about, or suggest another date.
When to leave it there: You did not feel the same way. Be kind and honest rather than returning interest you do not feel.
08 · They tell you they like you.
The situation: "Trying to be subtle, but I really like you."
Pick a reply to rewrite
I like you, too. I'm glad you said it.
I had a feeling. Very happy to have that confirmed.
I was hoping you did. Dinner this weekend?
What this reply does: Make your answer clear, even if you add a joke. They just took a chance on being direct.
What you could say next: Ask them out if you want to. If you need time, "I like getting to know you. Can we take this slowly?" is an answer, too.
When to leave it there: You feel pushed to give an answer before you are ready. Take the time you need.
09 · You are interested, but an invitation feels too intimate.
The situation: "When are you coming over to cuddle?"
Pick a reply to rewrite
I'd rather start with a date out.
Coffee first. I'd like to get to know you a little more.
I like you. I'm just taking the physical side slowly.
What this reply does: Say where you stand. You do not have to soften the limit with a flirty promise.
What you could say next: Suggest a public date if that is what you want. Their willingness to respect the answer matters.
When to leave it there: They argue with the limit or keep asking. You have already answered.
10 · You like the text. You also have work to finish.
The situation: "Thinking about you. Distracting, honestly."
Pick a reply to rewrite
Very nice interruption. I'm in meetings, but I'll text you tonight.
Same problem over here. Let me finish this before I lose the whole afternoon.
Looking forward to talking later. Call around eight?
What this reply does: A short reply can show interest and tell them when you will be free.
What you could say next: Text when you said you would. If work runs late, send a quick update.
When to leave it there: They demand immediate replies as proof that you care.
11 · You like them, but compliments leave you speechless.
The situation: "You have a very distracting smile."
Pick a reply to rewrite
Thanks. I'm bad at answering compliments, but I like hearing that.
I had a reply. It has completely left my head.
You're making me blush. I like you, too.
What this reply does: You can admit you are shy. You do not have to sound suddenly smooth to show that the attention is welcome.
What you could say next: Go back to something you already enjoy talking about. You have answered the compliment.
When to leave it there: You feel you have to get more intimate to keep their attention. Slow down.
12 · You want the conversation to stay friendly.
The situation: "We'd make a cute couple."
Pick a reply to rewrite
I like spending time with you, but I see us as friends.
I don't feel a romantic connection, and I wanted to be clear about that.
I'm not interested in dating. I'd like to keep this friendly.
What this reply does: You do not have to flirt back. A clear answer is kinder than a joke they might read as encouragement.
What you could say next: Give them room to respond or take some space. You do not have to negotiate your feelings.
When to leave it there: They keep testing the answer. End the conversation if you need to.
Questions you might have
How do I answer a flirty compliment?
A simple thank-you works. If you want to show interest, add something you mean, such as "I was hoping you would notice" or "I really liked seeing you tonight." You do not have to return a compliment just because you received one.
How do I flirt back without being too forward?
Keep it small and clear. Say you enjoy talking to them, mention a shared joke, or give a specific compliment. "I was hoping you would text" shows interest without making the conversation sexual.
What if I cannot tell whether they are flirting?
You can reply warmly and see where the conversation goes, or ask if you feel comfortable. One compliment does not settle it. If they tell you they meant it as a friend, believe them.
Do I need a clever response every time?
No. "I like you, too" is a good reply. Once the interest is clear, talk about something you both enjoy or make a plan. You can put the comeback contest down.
