Flirty conversation starters over text, with follow-ups

Start with something you actually noticed, then give them an easy way to answer. "Your pottery photos caught my eye. How did you get into it?" beats a line that could go to anyone. A shared joke can work, too. Choose a message you would say out loud, and leave room for them to show interest back.

Find a first message to rewrite

Give them something to reply to

A profile detail, a song they mentioned, the terrible movie you both defended. Start there. Add your own reaction, then ask one question if it helps. "You said that coffee place was your favorite. Good enough to convert a tea person?" gives the conversation a place to go.

These examples are for adults 18 and older who have a reason to be in touch, such as a dating-app match or an invitation to text. That opening lets you start a conversation. Their response tells you whether they want to continue.

Be as flirty as you mean to be

If you are still getting to know each other, curiosity is enough. If you already trade jokes, bring one back. If you want a date, ask for one. Skip pet names and sexual comments until you know they are welcome.

Looking for a text for him or for her? The shared detail matters more than a gender formula. Use what you know about this person.

Make an example sound like you

Pick a situation below and replace the book, hobby, or place with something real. Cut any phrase you would never say. Try a quieter version, then a more direct one. You might end up with "How was the concert?" or "I wish I had gone with you. How was it?" Send the one you mean.

Answer before you ask again

When they reply, stay with what they said. If they tell you about a disastrous cooking class, share your own kitchen failure before asking for the next chapter. Otherwise, even good questions can start to feel like a survey.

You do not need a stopwatch. Reply when you have time. If the message goes unanswered, leave it alone for now. Several new openers will not make it easier to answer the first one.

Find an example that fits

These conversations are fictional and prewritten. Change the details and wording to fit the person you are talking to.

01 · You matched with someone who makes pottery.

The situation: Their profile says, "I make slightly crooked mugs."

Pick a reply to rewrite

I respect a mug with personality. Which one's your favorite?
Your pottery photos caught my eye. How did you get into it?
I'd like to have coffee with you. Crooked mugs welcome.

What this reply does: The first two start with their hobby. The last makes your interest clear, so use it when you want a date.

What you could say next: If they send a photo of a mug, react to that one. Then share something you make, even if it is just a very good sandwich.

When to leave it there: They do not reply. Leave the pottery questions there.

02 · Their profile takes breakfast food very seriously.

The situation: "Breakfast food deserves dinner hours."

Pick a reply to rewrite

I'm on board. What's your order?
Pancakes, waffles, or a strong case for both?
Now I want waffles. Want to find some together?

What this reply does: An easy opinion gives you both something to add. You can also turn it into a real plan.

What you could say next: Share your order, too. If they want to meet, suggest a place that serves it.

When to leave it there: They turn down the invitation. You can keep chatting if they do, but skip another sales pitch for waffles.

03 · You exchanged numbers after a good conversation at a party.

The situation: You spent twenty minutes debating terrible movie endings.

Pick a reply to rewrite

Hey, it's Alex from Maya's party. Still thinking about that ending you defended.
It's Alex. Found another terrible movie for us to argue about.
Hey, it's Alex. I liked talking with you. Coffee this week?

What this reply does: Say who you are. Bringing back the conversation gives them more to answer than a mystery "hey."

What you could say next: If they defend the movie again, make your case. If they say yes to coffee, pick a day.

When to leave it there: They say they meant the number exchange as friendly. Take them at their word.

04 · A hiking photo caught your attention.

The situation: The caption says, "Worth the early alarm."

Pick a reply to rewrite

That view almost makes me understand morning people. Was the hike worth it?
How much of that hike was about the view, and how much was about the snacks?
I'm looking for an easy hike. Any favorites?

What this reply does: Ask about the outing rather than their usual route or when they go alone.

What you could say next: If they recommend a trail, say what appeals to you. For a first meeting, suggest a public place you both feel comfortable with.

When to leave it there: They skip a location question. Talk about something else.

05 · You already have a joke about your cooking.

The situation: You agreed to call kitchen disasters "restaurant research."

Pick a reply to rewrite

Restaurant research continued tonight. The smoke alarm gave it one star.
Saw a cooking class and thought of our many qualifications.
Want to let someone who knows what they're doing cook us dinner this week?

What this reply does: A shared joke makes this message yours. The dinner invitation works without another round of banter.

What you could say next: If they ask what you burned, confess. If dinner sounds good, choose a restaurant.

When to leave it there: The original joke embarrassed them. Leave it out of your next message.

06 · A good conversation went quiet a few days ago.

The situation: They recommended a song you finally listened to.

Pick a reply to rewrite

Finally listened. That chorus is going to be in my head all week.
Your song recommendation earned a permanent spot on my commute playlist. Got another?
Listened to that song and thought of you. How has your week been?

What this reply does: You have something to say besides asking why they disappeared. A gap does not need an investigation.

What you could say next: Tell them which part you liked, or send a song you think they would enjoy.

When to leave it there: You already followed up and heard nothing. Do not keep adding messages.

07 · You met at an event and they said to text.

The situation: They promised to introduce you to jazz beyond the one album you know.

Pick a reply to rewrite

Enjoyed meeting you. What was the album you said I should start with?
Ready for my jazz homework. Please remember I'm a beginner.
I liked talking with you. Want to catch a show together?

What this reply does: Use the conversation you actually had. Asking about a show also makes it clear you want to see them again.

What you could say next: Give the album a listen before asking for five more. If you both want a show, suggest one.

When to leave it there: They never gave you their number for personal contact. Do not use an event or work list to start flirting.

08 · You talk regularly and both have Saturday free.

The situation: "For once, I have absolutely no plans this weekend."

Pick a reply to rewrite

No plans sounds pretty good. What would make it an ideal Saturday?
Long lunch or getting lost in a bookstore? I could make a case for either.
I'd like to see you Saturday. Coffee?

What this reply does: Ask about their day if you want to chat. Ask for the date if that is what you have in mind.

What you could say next: If they describe a lazy day, share yours. If you agree to meet, settle on a time.

When to leave it there: They want the day to themselves. A free calendar is not an invitation.

09 · Their book pile looks suspiciously like yours.

The situation: "Buying books faster than I finish them."

Pick a reply to rewrite

Which book in the pile should I add to mine?
I have the same problem. A bookstore date might be financially irresponsible.
What's the last book you stayed up too late reading?

What this reply does: You can be playful about a shared habit without testing how much they have read.

What you could say next: If you do not know the book, ask what they liked about it. You do not need to pretend you have read it.

When to leave it there: They keep the answer short and do not ask anything back. Give the conversation a rest.

10 · You want a second date after a very loud first one.

The situation: Your cafe table was right beside the blender.

Pick a reply to rewrite

I had a really nice time. Even the blender couldn't ruin it.
Want to try a cafe where we can hear each other next week?
I liked spending time with you. Free Thursday for round two?

What this reply does: The shared detail makes it personal. You do not have to hide a second-date invitation inside a joke.

What you could say next: Once they say yes, suggest a quieter place and confirm the time.

When to leave it there: They say they did not feel a romantic connection. There is no comeback to write.

11 · You have both mentioned meeting. Nobody has picked a day.

The situation: "We should actually make plans."

Pick a reply to rewrite

Agreed. Coffee this weekend?
I'd like that. Are you free Sunday afternoon?
Coffee at Oak on Sunday? Happy to pick somewhere closer to you.

What this reply does: A day or a place turns "sometime" into an invitation they can answer.

What you could say next: Choose a plan that works for both of you. Then you can stop negotiating coffee.

When to leave it there: They keep declining and do not suggest another time. Leave the next invitation to them.

12 · You know each other socially and want to ask for a date.

The situation: You finally had a long conversation away from the group.

Pick a reply to rewrite

I liked getting to talk with you yesterday. Want to get coffee this week?
We should talk again without twelve people trying to choose a restaurant.
I'd like to take you on a date. Would you be into that?

What this reply does: You already know each other, but they may not know you are interested. The direct version clears that up.

What you could say next: If they ask whether you mean a date, say yes. If they agree, make the plan.

When to leave it there: They want to stay friends. Keep future messages friendly.

Questions you might have

What is a good first flirty text?

Use a real detail and give them something easy to answer. "I enjoyed our movie debate. What should I watch next?" makes sense after that conversation. If you want to be clearer, try "I liked talking with you. Want to get coffee this week?"

How do I start a flirty conversation without sounding cheesy?

Read the message out loud. If you would never say it, cut it. A comment about their actual profile or your last conversation will sound more personal than a grand compliment or a borrowed pickup line.

Should I send another opener if they do not reply?

Give them time. Depending on your relationship, one later follow-up may be reasonable. If you have already sent one and heard nothing, stop there. Switching apps or finding another number to get an answer crosses a line.

What if they answer with one word?

One short answer might mean they are busy. If every reply is short and you are asking all the questions, let the conversation end for now. You do not need to find a more impressive opener.
